Introducing My Genius Hour Project

Hello! My name is Saydie Potter and currently I am a Freshman enrolled at Moberly Area Community College. In the fall I will be transferring full time to Truman State University, majoring in Psychology and am also pre-education either in elementary or special education. I enjoy spending time with my loving family, raising sheep and cattle on our family farm, being outdoors with my Border Collie Jake, reading, cooking, baking, and more. I also like to volunteer and help out in my community.

I am enrolled in the Composition II class and we have been given the freedom to chose a project we want to pursue. My class and I decided to call this project our "Genius Hour." I have not had the opportunity in a class to have such free reign and do something I have not had the time to do. I am very excited about this project and can't wait to see what the outcome is.

At first with this project I wasn't for sure about what to chose, but the brainstorming activities aided me in my decision. When figuring out my project I thought back to what I enjoy doing with my family and that is cooking and baking. I have always wanted to create a cookbook with my family's recipes so I could easily access them as well share them with the future generations of my family. Cooking and baking has been a way to bring my big family together and celebrate joyous occasions or gather for family support. My Great-Grandmothers and Grandmother have passed on recipes to my Mother and I do not want these beloved recipes to disappear or be replaced with recipes that are not as good.

I will design the cover of my cookbook in the first week and gather all of my recipes I am going to use. Each week I will type up the recipes and I want to do a couple different kinds of foods a week, so I will fall within the deadline of my project's due date. I am going to call my cookbook, Treasury of My Family Recipes and dedicate it to my Great-Grandmothers and Mother. I can not wait to begin my Genius Hour Project and create my first cookbook!

  2. Saydie, what a great idea combining a talent you have with a love for your family. I wonder if you could incorporate Early Education / Special Education components into your project.
